Glasgow hospital urged to make contract cleaners available
A hospital in Scotland has been instructed to make sure contract cleaners are made available as and when they are needed.
A report by the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate found that although cleaning standards at Glasgow Royal Infirmary were found to be reasonably adequate, the hospital has to make sure that there is a constant supply of commercial cleaners made available to improve standards.
The report found that a lack of cleaning staff meant that toilets and bathrooms on one ward were not properly clean and there were no hand hygiene facilities at a staff exit where dirty linen and waste were removed.
Inspectors carrying out spot checks also found stained beds and mattresses on some wards across the hospital.
The hospital has now been given an action plan it must adhere to in order to improve hygiene and cleanliness levels within eight weeks.
Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "I have made tackling hospital infections my top priority and I am pleased to learn that Glasgow Royal Infirmary has implemented many of the measures designed to minimise the risk of infection among patients, staff and visitors."
